Australian Chinese, Chris Cheng was born of EuroAsian [Chinese+French] descent post war in Vietname, 1977. The Cheng family moved back to Hong Kong shortly after birth, before eventually settling in Australia in 1980. The family business was in Automotive repairs, his father a qualified Mechanic and Chef, while his mother a homemaker, with Cheng’s French grandmother a popular seamstress in their hometown. The textiles gene skipping a generation to Chris, whom took interest in an Artistic career with help of the supportive environment provided at home.
In 2003, Chris entered East Sydney College of TAFE – to begin his studies in Fashion Design. While interning with international Brand – G-Star International. By 2005, Chris’s skills attracted the attention of the venerable French Fashion House – Dior Couture and offered placement to supervise the Merchandise and Marketing departments for Dior Couture Oceania under the watchful eye of Mentor & General Manager – Jenny Gallyot.
By 2008, Chris re-enrolled to Saint George College of TAFE – to resume his studies in Design (Diploma). While placement with the International Brand – Coach/Jimmy Choo to work in an advisory role with entry into the Oceania Market. In 2009, Completion of Fashion and Business Management studies allowed for the setting up LAB Homme, with Cheng’s “Debut: capsule collection” presented to friends and private clients. Having received official invitation to present during the reknown Rosemount Australian Fashion Week RAFW. New Generations Section. A platform for up-n-coming talent to press, media and buyers appraisal. International Buyers from Japan also became the labels exclusive first season stockists.
By 2010, LAB Homme was selected to launch targeting a global market during Paris Menswear Fashion Week for PE and AH collections. It gained accolades via GQ Magazine Australia and L’Officiel Magazine France placing LAB Homme amongst the top 2 and top 5 menswear labels to watch respectively. In 2011, The development of 12-1-2 Koncept defusion line was also born due to popular demand for the brands signature intellectual minimalist approach. In 2013-2017+, LAB Homme extends into collaborative Projects/ collections under the premium brand LAB | Sud du Est & mainline LAB Homme.
